Are You Safe On The Cloud?

No one likes to lose control and this is one of the biggest fears most people have when they decide to migrate over to the cloud. The cloud is a safe place to do business and the disadvantages really are few and far between especially in comparison to all the benefits the cloud can present. Cloud was seen as the next generation in cloud and could do no wrong until one of the biggest cloud hosts went down. For over half an hour on Sunday night Amazon sites all over Europe were down. EC2 is Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud service which is responsible to hosting millions of sites all over the work including its own Amazon online shop, one of the largest ecommerce sites in the world.

Amazon's cloud hosting has always been demonstrated through their shopping sites so if they can't get that right what chance do other cloud computing companies have? Amazon have said this crash was the result of a hardware failure in a data center based in Europe. After all the negative press WikiLeaks has been receiving Amazon pulled their cloud hosting from them which left them open to hackers out for revenge. Amazon are quite sure and eager to tell us these problems were just down to a problem in their data centers. Their Web Services were not affected the last time they experienced down time back in June 2010.

As cloud is still growing and businesses are still wary this does mean that this has dented the reputation of the cloud and virtualization technology in general. Despite the controversy surrounding this outage Amazon have always said they operate their cloud with a 99.95% down time which does work out at about 4.5 hours a year. This down time was out of their control though which is why it's so worrying as it was unplanned. As cloud is just starting to take off this could be enough to damage its reputation before it's even had a chance to show us what it can do.
